To an avid sports fan, the appeal of a documentary film or series about sports is obvious. But our television critic Margaret Lyons argues that being part of a sports fandom is not a prerequisite for enjoying a sports documentary. The world of sports is full of dramatic twists, colorful characters, thrilling highs and agonizing lows — in other words, all the components of a great story. Sports documentaries can also be a way to fall in love with a sport you’ve never watched before. In this episode, Margaret talks about three recent sports documentaries that are worth your attention.

“Northern Exposure” premiered on CBS in 1990. Over the next six years, it drew millions of viewers, won a raft of Emmys and adorned the cover of multiple issues of TV Guide. But despite its success decades ago, “Northern Exposure” wasn’t widely available on streaming platforms until recently. Our TV critic Margaret Lyons considers how being out of circulation affected the show’s legacy, and the joys of rediscovering this classic series. On today’s episode

Best TV Shows of 2023

James PoniewozikBest Shows of 2023TV in 2023 was like synchronized swimming. A number of hall-of-fame series left the air, with no clear plan of, as it were, succession. As usual, I made it a rule not to repeat shows from the previous year, and as usual, I broke that rule. Even if Peak TV is dead, Off-Peak TV should keep us plenty busy. Now “The Bear” has that pride of place (at least until “Abbott Elementary” makes it back on my list).

TV flags are flying at half-staff today, with the news that Matthew Perry died on Saturday. The show’s continuing ubiquity makes Perry’s death more galling somehow — don’t certain stars achieve immortality through streaming and syndication? Perry was not the kind of actor who disappeared into a role but rather where the role disappeared into him. This is never more clear than in “The West Wing,” where Perry appears in three episodes as Joe Quincy, a clever lawyer. His arc on “West Wing” aired right around the same time as the final few episodes of “Friends,” and it modeled the kind of role we’d frequently see him in after Chandler: a fascinating, intelligent, perhaps lovable adversary.

This is hardly the first fall to be full of reality shows. ABC will keep “America’s Funniest Home Videos” alive until the sun eats the earth. ABC’s “Golden Bachelor” is “The Bachelor” with a 71-year-old widower at its center. Fox has a new cartoon from Dan Harmon (“Krapopolis”), his third current animated series. Lastly, there is Fox’s “Snake Oil,” a hybrid of “Shark Tank” and “Bullsh*t,” hosted by David Spade.

For reasons no one can quite decipher, the legal soap “Suits,” which aired on USA from 2011-2019, has become the show of the summer. While it was popular enough when it aired, I’ve read more “Suits” articles in the last few weeks than during the show’s entire run. The show is a hit on Netflix, but if you are on your “Suits” journey right now, note that the ninth and final season is in fact not on Netflix — though it is on Peacock and Amazon. Perhaps you’re thinking, “Wow, if only there were a spinoff to ‘Suits,’ surely everyone would want in on that.” Well, there is a spinoff to “Suits,” called “Pearson,” which follows Gina Torres’s character, Jessica Pearson, on her next legal endeavor. But in a perfect snapshot of the inane and hostile world of streaming, “Pearson” is not streaming on any platform.
